Economic Targeting Is A Fool’s Game

by Bob in economics, political, social

Democrats want to target different sectors of the economy to achieve their social engineering goals.  Any economist of any intelligence (this means no Marxists) knows that it is impossible for any person or government to pick and choose which sectors of an economy will be affected by any particular fiscal policy.

There are thousands of factors at play, and it is impossible to to isolate specific factors to effect the desired change on the target populations.

For example, the government is not able to effectively target research projects for technologies that will be successful in reducing our dependence on foreign oil.  There are existing private research projects for the same technologies, but they are not heavily funded with private money.

Important note: Private enterprise will NOT aggressively fund research that has little to no potential over a five to ten year period. If private enterprise will not commit money to a loser, why should the Federal Government?

Another important note: Manhattan Project style funding for energy projects does nothing to overcome basic laws of physics, or make a technology economically feasible.

The Manhattan Project was a success because scientists had already figured out nuclear fission. They just weren’t sure they could manufacture enough nuclear fuel to make it work.  Government stepped in and delivered massive funding to overcome a lack in facilities and manpower to do the work.

So, why do so many government bureaucrats and socialists think they can change the world’s energy picture just with the application of money?  The answer is really simple.  They don’t understand the basics of physics or economics.

For the same reasons, the Obama Administration cannot substantially change the nation’s jobs picture by targeting massive amounts of spending.  The jobs created by Obama’s stimulus plan are mainly government jobs, which will have to be funded by additional taxes after the stimulus money is gone.  That’s a fool’s game.

Even targeting small businesses will not necessarily increase job creation in the economy.  Nobody can know which business sizes, or what part of their business, will be affected by the targeted stimulus programs.  That’s why a general tax cut is always a good idea.

A general tax cut will make huge amounts of money available, INSTANTLY, to millions of businesses, consumers, and entrepreneurs.

Because we don’t know which entrepreneurs or small businesses will make the most difference, the smart move is to cut taxes for EVERYBODY!

That’s why targeted tax cuts and targeted stimulus spending is a fool’s game.

Obama and his socialist trained economists haven’t figured out that they cannot effectively or efficiently target economic progress.  It never has worked.

That’s why Obama is playing a fool’s game.

Obama’s Recession

by Bob in Current Events, economics

A lot of people recognize the current recession for what it is.  It had its beginnings in the lowering of credit standards so people with bad credit would qualify for loans they could not repay.

That’s it, pure and simple.  Not only did people with bad credit get loans, but people with decent credit could finance much larger homes for speculative purposes.

The financial sharks came out in droves milking the situation for everything it was worth.

If this were not bad enough the government backed home loan guarantors, The Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) and  the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac),  were forced by Congress to buy the high risk mortgages from the loaning mortgage banks.

Fannie and Freddie turned around and resold around these bad mortgages packaged with some good ones to the rest of the world.  Since the US Government is on the hook for everything Fannie and Freddie do, we are now having to pay Trillions of dollars in tax money to correct the stupid laws Congressional Democrats passed.

So, what does Obama do to  1) get the nation out of a recession if his party’s doings, and  2) what do the Democrats do about the dangerous way Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac do business?

Obama and his Democrat majority did NOTHING about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac except hide their heads and pretend that everything is alright. Those silly laws are still in existence.

Obama passed an almost one Trillion dollar “stimulus” package that generates NO MEASURABLE ECONOMIC BENEFIT in jobs or anything else.  His bill is simply the same old political payoff to big cities and states.

The recession may have started before Obama was elected to office, but this recession is his bought by the useless stimulus spending and ignorant economics of his Administration.

It has become generally known that Obama is not only incompetent as an executive, but in economics, too.

My Head Just Exploded

by Bob in economics, political

Financial Ruin will be good for the country.

Our Big Baby Barack Obama, Leader for Life, just announced he will sign the Democrat Financial Ruin Bill talked about so much in recent press articles.

So what’s wrong with making more regulation for banks and financial institutions?  My answer is that there are laws on the books, now, that would prevent pretty much any of our financial problems.  The Federal Government is just not doing its job.

The major problem with the Democrat’s Financial Ruin Bill is that it does not address the fundamental problem of the Federal Government’s mismanagement.

The fundamental problem with the government is Freddi Mac and Fannie Mae, government sponsored entities that packaged the bad mortgages into investment instruments and caused the recent world-wide meltdown of the world’s financial system.

Yep!  The Feds set up the whole thing, and will not admit this problem, and the Democrats refuse to correct this problem they initiated years ago.

I am tired of blaming everything on the Democrats, but they are so inept at finance, economics, science, and just about every other subject that it’s hard to NOT blame them.  In this case generalization is a accurate method of assessing culpability.

It’s too bad my head just exploded, because I really need to throw up!

Immigration – A Modest Proposal

by Bob in Current Events, economics, social

We have a problem.

Millions of people from the interior of Mexico and points south are pouring into our great country every year.  These are the modern day hungry, defeated, despised, and wretched refuse no other country in the world wants to shelter.

In the minds of many these illegals should be sent packing back to the tropical paradise of their origin.   They take jobs legitimate Americans should have, and cost local and national taxpayers billions of dollars in services they do not deserve.

Democrats and other atheists want us to do the Christian thing and show mercy to these poor souls, declare them citizens, and register them to vote for more Democrats.  They want “Comprehensive Immigration Reform”.

Comprehensive Immigration Reform is code for amnesty, and it’s a non-starter.

We need new solutions; stuff out of left field; brain storming ideas; and just plain bold proposals.

I have a bold plan.  It is simple, but not simplistic.

We should ask our illegal Mexican squatters to go home. They are no longer welcome.

The follow-up action is to vigorously prosecute companies who hire illegal aliens.  This is easier than it sounds, and does not involve buses, cattle cars, or German shepherds.

Note the simplicity, directness, and economy with which the problem is addressed.

The really big thing about the “Go Home” program is that it would not cost anything to implement.  No new laws, no prisons, and you can use the same cops we have.

The one thing that will make it work is to lock down the border.  Everything else will follow from this.

Drilling Moratorium Is Trojan Horse

by Bob in Current Events, economics, political

What is it with these people?  What do they think they can accomplish by issuing another moratorium on deep water drilling?

The Obama Administration still has no evidence or material findings that any other drilling operation is an immediate threat to the environment.  So, what’s up with that?

Stuart Varney of Fox Business News speculated that the Obama Administration is implementing the equivalent of a Trojan horse with their baseless moratorium.

The Trojan horse works like this.  If Obama succeeds in his moratoriums, he will apply the same reasoning to ALL offshore drilling.  If he succeeds in this he will have succeeded in banning ALL offshore drilling without going to Congress for legislation.  It will be a lawless coup.

Obama is an extreme environmentalist and an anti-capitalist.  His Trojan horse approach may succeed in killing whatever is left of the Amerian economy.  His actions are never as they seem, and you have to keep a sharp eye to decipher which shell game he is implementing.

Harvard Economics – Brain Dead Or Bonehead?

by Bob in economics, political, social

Economics? What's that?

Notice that I am allowing no middle ground on this penetrating question.  It seems that people graduating from Harvard have no clue on how the economy works.

Time and time again, their predilection is to resort to 19th Century Marxism.  What is Harvard teaching our best and brightest?

The whole spectacle is disappointing.  People graduating from one of the most prestigious institutions in the nation do not understand basic economics.  Instead, it is as if they are survivors of regurgitory educations, dutifully reciting tired cliches like “income distribution”, “fairness”, and “equal outcomes”.

Any ditch digger knows that taking money from some people and giving it to others is counter productive.  What are they thinking?

We know what they are thinking, and the President of The United States suffers from this same regurgitory educational model.  It is becoming painfully clear that President Obama is incompetent in economics.

Brain dead is the diagnosis for those who insist on following bankrupt19th century economic and social philosophies.  They have had their chance with the best educations and sponsorships available, and have failed the grade.

Shall Obama’s legacy name be “Obama the Brain Dead”?  Or should it be “Obama The Bonehead”?

Obama’s Panic – Not A Picnic At The Beach

by Bob in economics, history, political

Barry Looking For Souvenir of His Biggest Nightmare

The President’s reaction to the BP Horizon oil platform disaster and his words about the situation are becoming an historical illustration on how chief executives should NOT behave.  He is in a reactive and panic driven mode.

Executives in most organizations earned their positions by being savvy operators,  especially when others were hitting the panic button and losing their heads over things out of any one’s control.  The important words here, “earned” and “executive”, unfortunately do not apply to the 44th President of the United States.

President Barack Obama, undoubtedly a very intelligent person, had zero experience in managing organizations prior to his election.  Sometimes we  have to trust Lady Luck because we have elected a bunch of people like this, including Lyndon Johnson, John Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Harry Truman, and Franklin Roosevelt.

Barack Obama is the worst of the bunch.

The best of the bunch was Harry Truman.

LBJ got us into the Vietnam war; John Kennedy almost got the world incinerated during the Cuban missile crisis; Jimmy Carter is famous for his fecklessness during the Iran Hostage situation; and Franklin Roosevelt made the economy worse with his profligate initiation of socialist programs, and  had to rely on World War II to bail us out of the Great Depression.

Now, we have President Obama with no measurable work experience entrusted with the nation’s security, economy, and general well being.  His problem is that he doesn’t understand that security starts with securing our borders; the economy suffers under heavy taxes during a recession; and his spending has driven the nation’s debt up to the point that the economy will never see a robust recovery from the current recession.

The President just doesn’t get it.   He has no one but ideologues as advisers with crazy ideas.  They are real goof-balls.

The Sad State of US Immigration

by Bob in economics, history, personal, political, social

Arizona’s passage of an immigration enforcement law has focused the debate of what to do about people entering this country illegally.

Here in Georgia this last week we have learned that a senior at Kennesaw State University has been discovered as not being a citizen of the United States.  Her parents brought her into this country when she was eleven years old, and she has been forced to live a lie ever since.

Jessica Collotl - Illegal Immigrant

Twenty one year old Jessica Colotl is close to graduating from college, belongs to a sorority, and is apparently the kind of person we want to immigrate to this country.  In her life she has demonstrated ambition, drive, and initiative, some of the things we have learned to respect as marks of a worthy individual.  She has also demonstrated an aptitude to lie, forge documents, and otherwise flaunt our laws.

Her parents have apparently been able to raise her with some degree of principle, and they have undoubtedly done their best for their children. The problem is that they haven’t paid their share of her education.

Officials at KSU need to answer some critical questions.  Did they check Ms Colotl’s citizenship claims when accepted to the university? Are there scholarships or government grants involved in paying for her education?

Even though KSU is state supported, that doesn’t mean that education is for free.  Without a doubt, Jessica has gotten her tuition paid by the HOPE Scholarship, funded from the state lottery.  There are citizenship requirements attached to those funds, too.

US Government grants or loans for education are predicated on the recipient being a US citizen.  To get financial aid, Ms. Colotl had to fill out a FAFSA, an invasive form demanding IRS tax return information for several years for all college students and their parents.

The FAFSA has to be completed BEFORE any scholarship, grant, or loan can be awarded.  It is a humiliating process intended to make sure students don’t get any more funding than alloted by some  mysterious formula applied by the US Government.  I had to go through the process for each school year and for each college student in my family.

Obviously, fraud was committed by Ms. Colotl.

What should we do about this?  Here is a young person, brought to this country by her parents, not at her initiative.  She has been living a lie for 10 years, and has broken local, state, and federal laws.

Here is where common sense should prevail.  The girl had no control over her life at age 11, but she has been an adult for three years and understands the consequences of being caught.  She is not stupid.

Compassion is in order, here.  Let Ms Colotl pay for her education in the same magnitude as other international students who are in this country for the LEGAL purpose of getting an education.  The State of Georgia charges double tuition for out of state students, and FOUR TIMES resident rates for international students.

Ms Colotl owes us a lot of money.  Let her pay.

Her parents should be deported.  They are the reason this young person finds herself in a position of living a lie just to get by in life.

Compassion is due to the child, and I don’t agree with visiting punishment on children for the sins of the parents.

Oil Usage Does Not Affect Electric Power!

by Bob in economics, science, social

It makes me go crazy, listening to all those TV mavens  punish us with their ignorance on how we have to use alternative power sources so we can GET OFF OIL!

As a former utility engineer, and casual user of Google, I can make the following expletive with great knowledge and without hesitation.

BULL!!!!!

Oil is not used in the United States for the production of electric power in any meaningful quantity.

The United States of America is Energy Independent in the production of electric power. We do not rely on petroleum products for our electricity.

OIL HAS ALMOST NOTHING TO DO WITH ENERGY PRODUCTION IN THE USA.

We generate most of our electric power with plants fueled with nuclear energy, coal, and natural gas.

Hydroelectric generation makes up a small percentage, with geothermal growing, but still a very small percentage of our total. and the usage of wind, solar, geothermal, etc. is so small it is not in the graph.  Thank you, Wikipedia!

Notice that petroleum accounts for only about 1% of fuel used to generate electricity.

Oil is a fossil fuel, but the fossil fuels used in the generation of electric power are coal and natural gas.

The next time you hear a person on TV talk about having to build nuclear plants to get off oil, they are supremely ignorant and should be notified of their mental shortcomings.

Bad Luck Obama

by Bob in economics, history, political

President Barack Obama - 2nd Most Unlucky President

It seems that Barack Obama is one of the most unlucky Presidents to come along in a long time.  Only Herbert Hoover could have been as unlucky, being elected just in time for the Stock Market Crash of 1929 and The Great Depression.

Poor President Hoover.  He was a man of achievement, having amassed great wealth on his own talents, unlike President Barack Obama who has no record of intellectual, academic, or professional achievement.

Like Hoover, Obama  has done exactly the wrong things in the face of financial peril.

President Herbert Hoover - The Most Unlucky President

Barack Baby was elected as the financial markets in the US had crashed as the result of Democrat Congressional actions that  made housing available to poor people.  The Democrats in previous years had ram-rodded the idea that lower credit standards to allow poor families into houses they could not afford was the best way to provide housing for that group of people.

Wonder of wonders, the old lower the credit standards ploy did exactly as many had been warning. It crashed not only the US financial industry, but polluted the economies of other countries who bought the tainted securities containing these mortagages.

After the Bush Administration saved the nation and world from another Great Depression, Barack Obama had no choice but to continue the Bush Administration’s policy on the bank bailouts.

Barack Baby’s luck got worse with the ensuing recession, the deepest in decades.

So, what did the Big O’ do?  He pushed the so-called “stimulus” bill that bailed out his union buddies, state and local governments, and put the nation even deeper in debt to the tune of almost a $Trillion.  The gargantuan stimulus bill did not produce jobs by any measurable means.  Barack and his bogus buddies know this, and are making ridiculous claims that they “saved” many jobs.

What should he have done?

Obama should have reduced taxes like any responsible Chief Executive.  This would have stimulated the one sector of the economy that creates jobs and wealth, small business.  This is Economics 101, and our President still doesn’t get it.

Our under-educated President follows up the stimulus disaster with an unwise health care system that will put the country another $3 or $4 Trillion deeper in debt.  This is the result of his worship of bankrupt ideologies, supposedly learned during his Ivy League education. His resolution for any problem seems to be to create a government entity to handle it.

Bad Luck Obama started with bad luck, and doubled down with bad policies, bad economics, a bad staff,  and bad ideas.
